WHEREABOUTS OF A WOMAN

I am the country girl,
In the dawn, with the steed, on the farm
And in the wandering of your mind.

I am the homeless urchin,
In the noon, with the burns, on a test
And in the sparkling of your eyes.

I am the lonely soul,
In the dusk, with the storm, on a fight,
And in the haziness of your dreams.

I am the invisible romantic,
In the dark, with the moon, on a poem,
And in the secret of your heart.

But am I, you ask
In the words, with the men, on their mouths
And in the allegations of your horrors?

Yes, but I am also the pretty bride
In the frilly frock, with wavy hair,on the run
And in the reasons of your smiles .

  2. Romance
Romance, who loves to nod and sing
With drowsy head and folded wing
Among the green leaves as they shake
Far down within some shadowy lake,
    To me a painted paroquet
    Hath been—most familiar bird—
Taught me my alphabet to say,
To lisp my very earliest word
While in the wild wood I did lie,
    A child—with a most knowing eye.
    Of late, eternal condor years
So shake the very Heaven on high
With tumult as they thunder by,
I have no time for idle cares
    Through gazing on the unquiet sky;
And when an hour with calmer wings
Its down upon my spirit flings,
That little time with lyre and rhyme
    To while away—forbidden things—
My heart would feel to be a crime
Unless it trembled with the strings.
